Organic traffic is the visitors who land on your website through a search engine's regular, unpaid results. Someone searches "bike repair Leeds", sees your page among the results and clicks. You don't pay per click, as you do with paid search ads. You earn that spot by offering relevant, reliable content.
For many small businesses, organic traffic is one of the most valuable sources of new customers. It takes an investment in time and content, but a well-ranking page can keep attracting visitors for months or even years without you paying per visit.
In analytics tools such as Google Analytics 4, organic traffic usually appears as a separate channel, alongside direct traffic, referrals, social media and paid campaigns. It is mostly visitors from Google, but also from Bing and other search engines. Traffic from AI assistants such as ChatGPT or Perplexity is often not counted as organic, but as referral traffic. That distinction is worth knowing when you compare figures.
In Google Search Console you see the other side of the story: which searches your pages were shown for, how often they were clicked and their average position. Analytics tells you what visitors do on your site; Search Console tells you how they got there. Together they give a much fuller picture than either one on its own.
A rising line in your traffic chart feels good, but in the end it is about the right visitors. An accountancy firm in Leeds that writes a popular article on "how does income tax work" may attract lots of visitors from across the country, but few potential clients. A page on "accountant for new sole traders in West Yorkshire" attracts fewer visitors, but they are people looking for a service. So don't just look at volume, but also at conversions such as contact requests, quotes or purchases.
With Google AI Overviews and AI assistants, searchers increasingly get an answer without clicking through. For some searches, that can lead to less organic traffic, even if your visibility stays the same. That makes it important to look beyond clicks alone. Are you mentioned or cited in AI answers? How often do you appear in the results, even without a click? Concepts such as zero-click search and AI visibility therefore belong alongside the classic traffic figures.
To understand why your traffic is rising or falling, you need to look at traffic, rankings and impressions together. By tracking your visibility in search engines and AI assistants, you see not only how many people visit, but also where you are visible and where you are losing ground.
