Search Engine Optimization

SEO

SEO is the process of optimising your website so it is easier to find in the unpaid search results of search engines such as Google.

SEO, short for Search Engine Optimization, covers everything you do to make your website easier to find in the unpaid results of search engines. The goal isn't just to rank higher, but above all to attract the right visitors: people looking for exactly what you offer.

SEO isn't a one-off fix but an ongoing process. Search engines constantly adjust their systems, competitors work on their own websites and customers' questions change. If you approach SEO in a structured way, you gradually build a channel that keeps delivering visitors in the long term, without paying per click as you do with SEA.

The three pillars of SEO

SEO is usually divided into three main areas:

  • Technical SEO: making sure search engines can crawl, understand and index your site. Think of speed, mobile display, a correct sitemap and a logical URL structure.
  • On-page SEO: the content and structure of your pages, such as titles, subheadings, copy, images and internal links, tailored to what people search for.
  • Off-page SEO: signals outside your website, such as links from other sites, mentions of your brand and reviews.

For businesses with a physical location or a fixed service area, local SEO comes on top of that, including your Google Business Profile and consistent contact details.

Where do you start as an SME?

A practical order that works for most smaller businesses:

  1. Check that your most important pages are indexed in Google and technically sound.
  2. Map out what your customers search for and which questions they ask.
  3. Create a clear page for each service or product group, tailored to the search intent.
  4. Work on your local presence and ask happy customers for a review.
  5. Measure the results and adjust based on what you see.

An accountancy firm in Manchester that creates separate pages for start-ups, freelancers and limited companies, with concrete answers to their typical questions, gives search engines far more to go on than a single general "Our services" page. On top of that, each audience feels spoken to directly.

SEO and AI search

With Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT Search, Gemini and Perplexity, people increasingly get a direct answer instead of a list of links. That doesn't make SEO redundant. Quite the opposite: many AI search environments pull their information from the web, and pages that are easy to find, clearly structured and trustworthy are a logical source for that. What does change is the goal. Alongside a high position, it becomes important to be named as a source in AI answers. That complementary discipline is called GEO.

What SEO isn't

SEO isn't a trick to mislead search engines. Keyword stuffing, bought links or mass-produced copy with no added value tend to work against you over time. Google's guidelines clearly describe which practices it considers spam. Sustainable SEO is about a technically healthy site with content that genuinely helps your customers.
