Answer Engine Optimization

AEO

AEO is optimising content so that search engines and AI assistants use it as a direct answer to a question.

AEO stands for Answer Engine Optimization: structuring your content so that systems that give a direct answer use your information. Whereas classic SEO is mainly about a place in the list of blue links, AEO is about whether your text forms the answer someone sees or hears.

These "answer engines" come in different forms: the featured snippet at the top of Google, the box with related questions, voice assistants and, increasingly, AI applications such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews. The term overlaps heavily with GEO, which focuses specifically on generative AI. In practice, many people use the two terms interchangeably.

The idea behind it is simple: more and more people don't want a list of links, but a usable answer straight away. Whoever provides that answer gets the attention, even if the user doesn't always click through to the website.

How is AEO different from regular SEO?

AEO doesn't replace SEO; it builds on it. A page that isn't found or indexed can't become an answer source either. The difference lies in the focus. With AEO, you don't just ask yourself which keyword you want to rank for, but above all which concrete question your customer is asking and whether your page gives a clear, quotable answer to it.

Think of a roofer in Leicestershire. People don't just type "roofer Leicester", they also ask: "How much does a new flat roof cost per square metre?" or "Do I need permission for roof insulation?" If you answer those questions clearly and honestly, you're more likely to be picked up as a source.

How to get your content ready for answer engines

  • Start with the answer. Put the core in the first sentence or two under a question, and only then go into the nuances.
  • Use questions as subheadings. Clear headings help systems match the right piece of text to the right question.
  • Be concrete. Price ranges, timescales, conditions and steps are more useful than general promises.
  • Structure your content. Lists, tables and short paragraphs are easier to process than long walls of text.
  • Add structured data where it fits, such as FAQ, product or organisation information.
  • Show who's behind the information. Experience and expertise make your content more credible.

Common mistakes

A classic pitfall is an FAQ section full of questions nobody asks, with vague answers. Another is hiding the answer under three paragraphs of introduction. Copy written entirely around one search term without real substance also rarely does well with AI systems. They look for the source that answers the question best and most clearly.

How do you measure the effect of AEO?

Measuring is trickier than with classic rankings. Answers vary by user and by wording, and not every AI application shows its sources. A practical approach is to regularly test a fixed set of questions in different AI tools and check whether your business is mentioned or cited. If you also want to create targeted content that responds to questions like these, see how AI content for answer engines can help you publish strong, well-structured pages faster.
