People Also Ask

People Also Ask is the box in Google with expandable questions related to the search.

People Also Ask, often shortened to PAA, is the box of expandable questions you see among the results for many searches. Click on a question and a short answer appears with a link to the source. Google often loads extra questions afterwards, so the box keeps growing.

If you create content, it gives you an interesting look into how searchers think. It shows which follow-up questions people have about a subject, in their own words. That makes it a practical source of ideas, and at the same time an extra place in the SERP where you can become visible.

How does the box work?

Google chooses which questions it shows and which pages provide the answer. The answers are usually short extracts from a web page, similar to a featured snippet: a paragraph, a list or sometimes a table. Which questions appear depends on the search, the language and the region. The box doesn't appear for every search and can change over time.

How do you use People Also Ask in your content strategy?

Say a solar panel installer in Kent searches for "home battery". He sees questions such as "Is a home battery worth it?", "How long does a home battery last?" and "Are there grants for a home battery?". Those are exactly the questions his customers ask on the phone. This is how he turns them into content:

  1. Collect the questions that appear for your most important topics, including after expanding a few of them.
  2. Group them by theme and decide which page can give the best answer.
  3. Use the question, or a clear variation of it, as a subheading.
  4. Directly below that heading, give a short, clear answer of two or three sentences.
  5. Then expand with details, examples and nuances that are specific to your situation and your market.

Keep the information accurate and up to date. With topics such as grants and regulations, the facts change regularly. In that case, also mention when you last updated the page.

People Also Ask and AI search

The questions in People Also Ask closely resemble the way people talk to an AI assistant. They're concrete, in everyday language and often geared towards a decision. AI systems also often split a complex question into sub-questions, which is known as query fan-out. Content that answers such sub-questions separately and clearly probably has a better chance of being used in Google AI Overviews or by ChatGPT and Perplexity. That makes People Also Ask a handy guide for AEO: it shows which questions are worth answering.

What to watch out for

  • Don't write a separate page for each question. Bundle related questions into one strong page or into a content cluster.
  • Don't copy answers from other sites; add your own experience and knowledge instead.
  • Don't expect a guaranteed spot: Google rotates sources regularly.

Want to get from a list of questions to well-structured pages faster? With AI content that starts from real search questions, you create content that answers those questions clearly, while you stay in control of what it says.
