Position in the search results

Ranking

A ranking is the position at which a page appears in the search results for a particular search query.

Your ranking is the position at which a page on your website appears in the search results for a particular search query. If your page is the first organic result, that is position 1. It sounds simple, but in practice a ranking is not a fixed number: it varies by keyword, by device, by location and sometimes even by user.

That is why there is little point in fixating on one position for one keyword. You get a more realistic picture by looking at trends across multiple searches and over longer periods, and by checking how many visitors those positions actually bring in.

Why your ranking is not the same everywhere

Various factors mean two people see different results:

  • Location. Someone searching for "electrician" in Leeds gets different results from someone in Bristol. For local searches, a local pack with a map often appears as well.
  • Device. Mobile and desktop results can differ.
  • Language and country. A searcher in the UK often gets different results from someone in Ireland or the US, even for the same English-language search.
  • Layout of the results page. Ads, AI summaries, images and question boxes sometimes push the first organic result a long way down the SERP.

How do you measure your ranking reliably?

The most direct source is Google Search Console. There you can see the average position, the number of impressions and the number of clicks for each query and each page. Note that "average position" is an average across all impressions, so it can fluctuate without much really changing.

Many businesses also use a rank tracker that measures at fixed times and from a fixed location. That gives a more stable comparison over time, although it is still a snapshot.

Googling yourself often gives a distorted picture, because your previous search behaviour and your location influence the results. Use it as a quick check at most, not as a measurement.

A real-world example

A bike shop in Bristol rises from position 9 to position 4 for "buy electric bike Bristol". Yet the number of visitors stays almost the same. On closer inspection, the search results now show a map with shops and an AI summary at the top. The better ranking is valuable, but the shop gains more from a stronger Google Business Profile and a clearer title to improve the CTR.

Ranking in a world of AI answers

With AI Overviews, Google's AI Mode and assistants such as ChatGPT and Perplexity, a high position is no longer the only form of visibility. A user can get their answer without clicking on a result. At the same time, pages that perform well in the traditional results seem to be used more often as sources in AI answers, although that is not a fixed rule. Ranking remains important, but it is best to also measure whether you are mentioned in AI answers. Together they give a fuller picture than your position alone, for example expressed as share of voice.

If you want to see your rankings and your presence in AI answers side by side, it helps to track your visibility continuously rather than searching manually now and then.
