Programmatic SEO

Programmatic SEO is creating many high-quality pages at scale, based on a template and structured data.

With programmatic SEO you don't create one page at a time, but a whole series of pages using the same template, fed by structured data. Each page targets a specific combination, for example a service in a particular town or a product in a particular size. That way you can serve hundreds of relevant searches without writing every page entirely by hand.

The principle is simple; the execution needs care. A template without real, unique information quickly produces pages that look alike and offer little value. The difference between a strong and a weak approach almost always lies in the quality of the underlying data.

How does programmatic SEO work?

Most projects follow the same steps:

  1. Find a pattern. You look for a recurring structure in how people search, such as "[service] in [town]". These are often long-tail keywords, each with a modest volume but with large potential together.
  2. Gather data. For each combination you need your own accurate information: prices, availability, specifications, local details or practical examples.
  3. Design the template. You build a page structure in which that data lands in a logical, readable way.
  4. Safeguard quality. You check whether each page genuinely adds something and drop combinations for which you have too little to say.
  5. Publish and monitor. You ensure a clear internal structure and an up-to-date sitemap, and measure which pages attract visitors.

A local example

Take a roofer in Yorkshire who works in around twenty towns and carries out five types of work. A separate landing page for each combination of service and area can make sense, provided each page contains something of its own: completed projects in that area, typical roof types in the region, local planning information or the average travel time. A page where only the town name changes helps no one.

The same principle works for an online shop. A garden furniture shop can generate an overview page for each material, colour or size, provided there are enough products and specific explanations available for each combination. A filter page with two products and a stock sentence at the top is not a good candidate. So choose deliberately which combinations deserve their own page and which don't.

Pitfalls to avoid

  • Thin pages. Templates with hardly any unique content count as thin content. Google says it may treat mass-produced pages without added value as spam.
  • Near-identical text. Too much overlap between pages leads to duplicate content and confusion about which page should rank.
  • Too much at once. Publishing thousands of pages in one go can put pressure on your crawl budget. Start with a smaller series and expand what works.
  • No maintenance. Outdated prices or closed branches undermine visitors' trust.

Programmatic SEO and AI search engines

AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini look for concrete, specific answers. A well-built programmatic page with precise data per region or product can be a useful source for them, precisely because it answers a narrow question exactly. Generic template text doesn't offer that advantage. So here too, unique, verifiable information makes the difference.
