Pillar content page

Pillar page

A pillar page is a comprehensive overview page on a broad topic that links to pages going into more depth.

A pillar page is the starting point for a complete topic on your website. Instead of ten separate articles that each tell part of the story, you bring the essentials together on one clear page and link from there to pages that go into more depth. Visitors get the big picture straight away, and anyone who wants to know more clicks through to the detail.

Think of a pillar page as the table of contents of a good handbook, but with real content added. It answers the main questions around a theme in sufficient depth, without working out every subtopic in full detail. You leave that detailed work to the supporting pages in the same content cluster.

What does a good pillar page look like?

A strong pillar page has a clear structure in which readers quickly find what they are looking for. It usually contains:

  • a short introduction explaining what the topic is about and who the page is for;
  • logically ordered sections with clear subheadings, each focused on one sub-question;
  • for each section, an internal link to a page that explores that subtopic further;
  • concrete examples, a summary table or a step-by-step plan where that helps;
  • a closing section with a logical next step for the visitor.

Length is not a goal in itself. A pillar page can be extensive, but every paragraph needs to add something. Padding only makes the page harder to read.

Why invest in a pillar page?

Search engines try to understand what your website is really about. When you build a well-structured whole around a theme, with a central page and supporting articles that link to each other, that coherence becomes clearer. That contributes to your topical authority: the impression that your site is a reliable source on that topic.

It works for your visitors too. Someone who is still exploring often has a broad search intent and wants an overview first. A pillar page catches that visitor and guides them step by step towards more specific information.

A practical example

Say a heat pump installer in Yorkshire has been writing separate blog posts for years about grants, noise, efficiency and maintenance. Those posts are scattered and hardly link to each other. By creating one pillar page, "Everything about heat pumps for your home", with a section per sub-question and links to the existing posts, a logical whole suddenly emerges. The existing posts in turn link back to the pillar page.

Pillar pages and AI search

AI search tools such as ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews often break a question down into several sub-questions, a process called query fan-out. A pillar page that answers each of those sub-questions clearly and separately provides exactly the kind of text blocks such a system can use. Clear subheadings and short, self-contained answers make it easier to pull a passage from your page and show it as a source. There are no guarantees, but a well-structured page does make your content more usable.
