When an AI assistant formulates an answer, it increasingly refers to the pages that answer is based on. That reference, often a clickable source label or a numbered footnote, is what we call a citation. For you as a business owner, it's the new form of "being found": your website isn't in a list of ten blue links, but is quoted directly as a trustworthy source.
A citation is different from a mention. An AI tool can name your brand without linking to it, or show your page as a source without naming your business. Both are valuable, but a citation provides a concrete path to your site and a signal that your content was used as evidence.
Every major AI search environment shows sources in its own way:
Which sources are chosen differs per question and per moment. The same answer may contain different citations tomorrow, which makes monitoring over a longer period important.
The exact selection isn't public, but a few patterns are fairly clear. For a given question, AI systems retrieve a set of relevant pages and pick out fragments that support the answer. Pages that answer a question clearly, factually and concisely are easier to use as evidence. Trust probably plays a part too: sources with clear expertise and a good reputation, in line with E-E-A-T, seem to be chosen more often.
Your page also has to be technically accessible. If you block AI crawlers or your most important text is hidden behind scripts, a system simply can't read your content.
Suppose an accountancy firm in Manchester writes a clear page on VAT returns for new businesses, with the quarterly deadlines, a short checklist and a clearly named author. If someone asks Perplexity "when do I need to submit my VAT return as a new business in the UK?", that page is a logical candidate to serve as a source. The firm then appears in an answer, even though bigger sites may rank higher in the classic search results.
Because AI answers vary constantly, a single spot check has little value. It pays to test a fixed set of questions from your market regularly and note which sources keep coming back, including your competitors'. That way you can see how your AI visibility develops. With Spacebird's visibility tracking module, you follow those citations continuously instead of keeping track of them by hand.
