Authority

Authority is the extent to which search engines and AI systems regard your website as a reliable, authoritative source.

Authority is an umbrella term for how much trust and weight a website or business carries in the eyes of search engines and users. It isn't an official Google metric. Scores such as "Domain Authority" or "Domain Rating" were created by commercial SEO tools to approximate that trust, mainly based on backlinks. They are handy for comparisons, but Google doesn't use those figures itself.

Still, the idea behind it is real. Search engines want to show reliable sources, and AI assistants want to base their answers on information that is correct. If you are recognised as a credible source, you are more likely to be found and cited.

What's more, authority isn't built in a few weeks. It is the result of years of consistently good work, made visible on your website and beyond. That makes it hard to copy, and therefore valuable.

What does authority consist of?

There is no formula, but a few building blocks keep coming back:

  • Mentions and links from other websites, especially from relevant and respected sources in your sector or region.
  • Depth of content around your topic. If you cover a theme thoroughly, you build topical authority.
  • Visible experience and expertise, something Google describes under the heading E-E-A-T.
  • A recognisable brand that people search for explicitly.
  • Reputation, as shown by reviews and by what others write about you.

Authority for a small business: small but specific

A small business doesn't have to compete with national news sites or large chains. Authority is relative: it is about your own field and your own market. A landscaper in the Cotswolds who has been writing for years about natural gardens, rain gardens and native planting, and who is mentioned by a local wildlife trust and a regional newspaper, can become a strong source on those topics. Even though their website is much smaller than that of a national garden centre chain.

How do you build authority?

  1. Choose a clearly defined area in which you are genuinely an expert.
  2. Publish content that answers questions thoroughly and honestly, grouped into a logical content cluster.
  3. Show who is behind your business: names, experience, certifications, completed projects.
  4. Look for natural mentions through partners, local media, trade fairs or professional bodies.
  5. Encourage satisfied customers to write a review about their specific experience.

Quick tricks, such as buying links, rarely work in the long run and can be used against you. Google has clear guidelines against link schemes, and if you are caught, you can lose visibility rather than gain it.

Authority in AI search engines

With ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews, credibility probably also plays a role, although it isn't public exactly how those systems weigh sources. What does stand out is that AI answers like to refer to sources that cover a topic clearly and completely, and mention businesses that are described consistently in several places. Building authority is therefore an investment that can pay off in both traditional and AI search. A visibility audit gives you a first picture of where you stand compared with your competitors and which topics you can develop further to strengthen your position.
