AI Mode is a separate search experience from Google in which you don't get a list of links, but an extensive AI-generated answer that you can explore further with follow-up questions. Whereas AI Overviews show a summary above the regular search results, AI Mode is a fully conversational environment, similar to talking to a chatbot.
Google has rolled out AI Mode gradually across different countries and languages. Availability and features still change regularly, so what you see today may be different in a few months. The underlying principle stays the same, though: the user asks a question in plain language and gets a combined answer with links to sources.
Google has explained that AI Mode uses query fan-out: the question is split into several sub-questions that are searched at the same time. A language model then combines the results into a single answer, with links to the pages that served as sources. Because the user can ask follow-up questions, the system builds on the context of the conversation.
As a result, the questions people ask in AI Mode are often longer and more specific than traditional searches. A typical prompt includes a situation, a budget or a location.
For an SME, AI Mode mainly changes the way visibility works:
Someone asks in AI Mode: "I want to renovate my bathroom in Manchester with a walk-in shower, what steps do I need to follow and roughly what does it cost?" The answer may draw on a guide to bathroom renovation, a price indication from a tradesperson and an overview of local contractors. A bathroom specialist with a clear page on the steps, an honest price range and completed projects in the Manchester area then has more for the answer to latch onto than a competitor with only a photo gallery.
If the user then asks a follow-up question, such as "which contractors in Manchester have experience with walk-in showers for older people?", the answer shifts again. Businesses that also describe such specific situations on their website stay relevant as the conversation becomes more concrete.
There is no separate optimisation for AI Mode. Google says the familiar basic principles of SEO still apply: pages need to be crawlable and indexed, and offer useful, reliable information. On top of that, work on a clear structure, concrete answers under clear subheadings and a consistent business profile. Because AI Mode is still evolving rapidly, it is wise to check regularly how your brand appears in the answers. The best way to do that is to track your visibility in AI search environments for a fixed set of relevant questions.
